Common Chronic Medical Conditions

What you put on your plate is as important as breathing.

What you put on your plate is as important as breathing.

Studies indicate that asthma and allergies are second only to lower back pain in the United States of America.  There are many symptoms, but they are only outward manifestations of something much more serious and internal.  Mostly people are concerned with the discomforts that these symptoms cause.

Having an allergy is one of the major signs of toxic build-up in your Immune system.  So the focus ought to be balancing the Immune System.

What most people do not understand is this:  Digestion is absolutely at the foundation of your health

Keeping your Immune system healthy and strong is vital for your protection from disease.

To strengthen Your Immune System:

1.  Have a Positive Attitude

2.  Eat a diet that consists of fresh raw fruits and vegetables as well as fiber for roughage, for example, wheat bran

3.  Avoid simple carbohydrates–foods processed with refined ingredients such as in pre-packaged foods

4.  Ample Sleep and Relaxation

5.  Moderate Exercise to combat fatigue and stress

The Gut is the Key to Overall Health

Certain medications can irritate or damage the lining of your intestines causing a serious problem such as Leaky Gut:

Antibiotics are one of the biggest offenders and can annihilate your friendly gut flora.

Radiation, chemotherapy steroid drugs, aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen and other NSAIDs can increase intestinal permeability.

Other health issues besides Leaky gut that may show up are:  Parasites, Crohn’s Disease, Celiac Disease, Inflammatory Bowel Disease, and Irritable Bowel Syndrome–these all are traced to food intolerance.

Awareness of Toxic Beauty

Your fingernails can tell a lot about the health of your liver.

Toxic beauty not only affects the outside of your body, but the inside as well!  There is information out there on this subject matter, which is of great concern to us at Healthy Life Institute.  There are healthier products to use on your face, hair, nails, skin and even your laundry.

One example:  I came across a world-renowned celebrity green nail stylist, Jenna Hipp, from an article I read.  I really haven’t been to keen on putting toxic chemicals on my nails except in rare cases like my wedding, or the like.  Jenna Hipp was experiencing negative side effects when she applied nail polish to her clients, and would end up bleeding all over their hands–not good for business–but more important, not good for her own health.

Jenny Hipp uses her exclusive “Five Free Formulas” in her nail enamel products:  Contains No Dibutyl Phthalate; Contains No Formaldehyde Resin; Contains No Formaldehyde; Contains No Toluene; and Contains No Camphor.

I’ve tried those nail polishes and love them, not only for the fact that they do not contain the above toxins, but for their long-lasting beauty.

The above are just a few examples of beauty products commonly used.

Below are Five most commonly used ingredients in the majority of beauty products:

1.  Diethanolamine (DEA) is found in over 600 home and personal care products such as soaps, lotions, cosmetics, bubble baths, laundry and dishwashing detergents and more.  DEA is used to provide a rich lather in shampoos and keeps a good consistency in lotions and creams.

2.  Propylene Glycol is a substance used in antifreeze solutions and hydraulic fluids as a powerful solvent.  Ironically enough, it is also found in childhood vaccinations, cosmetics, toothpastes, shampoos, deodorants, lotions, and even processed foods (including pet foods).  Propylene Glycol helps products retain moisture, and when used on your skin, helps it stay soft and moist.  That’s why it is found in most baby wipes and skin lotions.

3.  Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) is perhaps the most common of the three chemicals and by no means any less toxic.  SLS is used as a surfactant to break down the surface tension of water.  Therefore it will break up grease and is used in concrete floor cleaners, engine degreasers, and carwash detergents.  Unfortunately the same degreaser is being used in practically every soap, shampoo and toothpaste on the market today.

4. Phthalates are dangerous chemicals found in plastics that cause endocrine disruption and cancer. Phthalates are also found in baby care products. A study testing the urine of 163 infants between two and twenty five months of age found 80% of the infants had at least 7 phthalate metabolites in their urine. All infants in the study had detectable levels of at least one phthalate metabolite. Almost all of the mothers had used baby wipes and over half of the mothers had used baby shampoo on their infants within 24 hours of the urine collection.

5. Nanotechnology is an emerging technology that involves manipulation of materials at the scale of atoms and molecules. To give you an idea of how small a nanometer is, a human hair is 80,000 nanometers in diameter. This technology is entirely unregulated and almost no testing has been done for its health effects. Nanotechnology is of a concern because it is now being used in virtually all personal care products from make-up to toothpaste and perfume. Unless you call the companies that manufacture your personal care products and ask if they use nanotechnology, there is no way of knowing if those products contain nanoparticles. Companies are not required to test nanoparticles or label them.

Aspirin Your Heart . . . And More!

The FDA now says that they have concluded the data does not support the use of aspirin as a preventive medication by people who have not had a heart attack, stroke or cardiovascular problems.  They have called it a “primary prevention”.  The risks in people are much more serious; such as, dangerous bleeding into the brain or stomach.

Bayer is a pharmaceutical company that wanted to change their aspirin label to indicate it can help prevent heart attacks in healthy individuals.  Aspirin has generated $1.27 billion in sales for Bayer recently.  Dr. Mercola says that it appears Bayer wants everyone to be taking their drug.

FDA told them “not so fast”–evidence in support of using aspirin preventatively has gone from weak to nonexistent.  Dr. Mercola has been advising against it for almost a decade–and “low-dose aspirin” (LDA) may do more harm than good.

 Aspirin and Cardiac Studies

About 800,000 Americans die from cardiovascular disease annually–heart attacks and stroke are included.  Dr. John g. F. Cleland, a cardiologist from the University of Hull in the UK wrote an article in the British Journal of Medicine questioned the efficacy of aspirin therapy for prevention of heart attacks.  After a study was conducted when following 100,000 or more patients at risk for cardiac events, Dr. Cleland concluded that aspirin therapy was not saving lives.

This is interesting to point out:  The number of non-fatal events may be reduced, but the number of sudden deaths is actually increased.  Why?  Because aspirin can mask a cardiac event in progress which is what most physicians don’t realize.

Aspirin Increases Risk of Bleeding

One chief adverse effect is gastrointestinal bleeding because aspirin interferes with your platelets (blood cells that clot the blood).  According to one article, long-term low-dose aspirin therapy may double your risk for gastrointestinal bleeding.

One study found that Aspirin also increases the risk of bleeding in the brain, especially in older individuals.  When elderly patients were taking aspirin when they suffered a head trauma–the result was a deadly brain hemorrhage.

Aspirin destroys the lining of your gastrointestinal tract.  My own father developed a rare but serious form of cancer of the lining of the abdomen.  You see, for years he would take aspirin for his migraine headaches and he didn’t swallow them with fluids–he sucked on the aspirin until it dissolved thinking it would relieve his headache faster.  Not a good practice!  The cancer he had could not be operated on and removed.  The only treatment for that was Chemotherapy–it was not a very good quality of life for him.  He died in May of 1989.

Aspirin may be one of the oldest killer drugs!

Auto-immune Reactions or Allergies in Your Family

” . . . there are many . . . surprising effects of intestinal parasitic infection that often occur outside your digestive system.” Leo Galland, M.D.

“If you think intestinal parasites only lead to gut disturbances such as upset stomach and diarrhea, think again.  Because problems that happen in your stomach don’t stay in your stomach.”

Dr. Galland says that [these surprising effects] are primarily due to allergic and autoimmune reactions provoked by the parasites and include:

  • Asthma
  • Hives
  • Arthritis
  • Uveitis (inflammation of the interior of the eye)
  • Blood clots caused by antiphospholipid antibodies
  • Paralysis (Guillain-Barre syndrome)
  • Malnutrition

The most common effects of intestinal parasites is food allergy.  It is Dr. Galland’s belief that anyone with food intolerance or allergy should be tested for intestinal parasites.

Unsuspected Causes of Chronic Illness

Parasites may cause allergic or autoimmune disorders in two ways:

1.  The inflammation caused by an intestinal infection can cause an increase in the permeability of the small intestine, a phenomenon known colloquially as “leaky gut”.

2.  Over two-thirds of your body’s immune system is located in the wall of the small intestine.  The immune cells (called lymphocytes) leave the intestine and travel all over your body.  When activated by a parasitic infection, they can carry the inflammatory message to your joints, your skin, your eyes, and your lungs.

Parasites and Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA)

Chronic Entamoeba histolytica infection of humans has been associated with autoimmune phenomena such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA).  Research suggests that an excessive and prolonged antibody response to Entamoeba histolytica or other enteric organisms may contribute to joint inflammation in RA.

Parasite Problem is Worldwide

Parasitic infection is not unusual for people living in the United States.  Americans can get parasites all of the time, even if they don’t travel outside of the country.  Staying clear of parasites can be a challenge especially with people from other countries traveling to the U.S. or produce that is imported here.

“Over 90 percent of individuals infected with Entamoeba histolytica are asymptomatic.  Asymptomatic carriers may spread infection to others who then develop symptoms.”

What’s living in Your Digestive Tract?

People are exposed to one of the most toxic environments within their own gastrointestinal tract.  Every inch, from the mouth to the anus, is colonized by bacteria.

The gastrointestinal tract is a complex and dangerous frontier

All nutrients required for your life must pass through the gastrointestinal tract–in this large area–there is much that can go awry.  This leads to a rather larger range of ailments.  The intestinal tract is the largest organ of immune surveillance and response in the human body.   Often known as “the second brain”.

Billions of Bacteria Lend a Helping Hand

There are over 500 species of bacteria that live in the healthy human body.  Bacteria have been around longer than humans and have been with us ever since.  The normal healthy bacteria help you generate energy from food you eat.

Medicines Can interfere with Bacteria

Alteration in the level of normal flora by antibiotics has long been known to allow secondary infection by pathogenic bacteria and yeasts.

Bacteria Gone Bad

Bacteria are dangerous tenants, causing dysbiosis (cell death)–a common problem.  Some by-products of bacterial enzyme activity, like ammonia, hinder normal brain function.  When absorbed into the body, they must be removed by the liver.

Reinoculate the Bowel

Get off of your antibiotics and reinoculate your bowel with good bacteria by preparing your own probiotics such as:  fermented vegetables, yogurt, kefir, and fermented/dehydrated nuts and seeds.

What’s Good For You?

Healthy Foodsspinach

We are told to eat a lot of raw dark green & red leafy vegetables.  Just how much is a  lot?  Americans think that if a little is good for you then a lot must be much better for you.

What about “Green Smoothies” that are all the rage?

If you put in a lot of Spinach or beet greens, for example, you get a lot of oxalic acid.  What does it do?  It causes a great deal of pain in your joints (inflammation).  In addition, too much raw spinach can affect your thyroid.

kaleThen, there is kale, for example, your urologist loves you because you have kidney stones, and that keeps him/her in business.

All foods should be eaten in moderation instead of obsessively because you also don’t want to avoid all the nutritious foods–then you would become deficient in your nutritional needs.

What about “Whey Protein” in your smoothies?

“The most common protein sources used in commercial powders include soy, egg, whey, & wheat gluten. An intelligent consumer must be very suspicious of these. Soy and gluten containing proteins (wheat, barley, rye, oat, kamut, & spelt) are highly allergenic and promote inflammatory reactions within the body.

Soy protein is an anti-nutrient that should be avoided for several reasons. Soy contains phytic acids that bind and pull major minerals such as calcium, magnesium, & zinc from the body. High processed soy consumption is linked with deficiencies in these major minerals. Soy also contains enzyme inhibitors that turn off natural enzymes needed to perform critical cell functions. Goitrogenic substances that block thyroid hormone are highly prevalent in soy foods as well.”

Non-denatured, grass-fed whey protein concentrate (not isolate) from organic pastures is the highest quality protein source for most individuals. This form of whey protein contains beta-glucans, lactoferrins, & immunoglobulins that enhance immune function. Additionally, non-denatured whey contains all the branch chain amino acids and optimal ratios of essential amino acids. Finally, non-denatured whey protein is one of the best food sources for boosting cellular anti-oxidants such as glutathione.

Learn more:

Too much whey protein or animal protein including some kinds of fish, like cod, can cause gout to form.  It causes inflammation and can swell up your feet and is very painful.  One advises you to drink a lot of water.  Gout goes in a cycle lasting from 7 to 10 days generally.  Soaking the foot also helps alleviate the swelling and pain.  Avoid foods high in uric acid like bananas, pumpkin, apricots, etc.  Eat instead cherries, even frozen, or grapes, and other berries.

we are told to exercise to get fit, to lose weight, to improve your heart, increase your muscle mass, etc.  Too much exercise or exercise for long periods of time can age a person faster than doing short interval or “burst” bursttraining1exercises for a few minutes a day.

Americans are too sedentary.  They sit to watch too much television or movies or read to relax and unwind.  Work causes too much sitting because the majority of us use computers in our work.  What can you do?  It was suggested to me to get up from sitting at my computer about every 15 or 20 minutes and do another activity before going back to the computer.  I think that’s wise advise and I’m passing it on to you.  If you lose track of time, set your alarm clock for 15 minutes–maybe this will help you get up and move.

What is it about alkaline water that makes it so healthful?

The body is perfectly capable of maintaining its own pH balance provided it receives the proper nutrients. When the body is not getting enough alkaline minerals from food and water, it must rob calcium from its own bones to neutralize acidity. This is not ideal and once the body’s readily available alkaline mineral supplies are depleted, it becomes overly acidic.

It is important to note that water can be either naturally alkaline or artificially alkaline. Why? Naturally alkaline water contains the alkaline minerals the body needs to combat acidity. Artificially alkaline water, such as water from a typical alkaline water ionizer machine, has a pH that is artificially increased and does not have any more alkaline minerals than the original water used to supply the machine. Artificially alkaline water has also been proven to cause side effects, and from a chemical perspective, such a water cannot be found anywhere in nature.

What is Kangen Water®?

Kangen Water® is delicious water created from Enagic’s innovative water technology. Not only do these devices filter your tap water, but they also produce ionized alkaline and acidic waters through electrolysis. These waters can be used for various purposes, including drinking, cooking, beauty, and cleaning.

Problems With Commonly Used Waters

Water image

Tap water is a healthier option than soft drinks. But according to the Environmental Working Group, there have been 315 pollutants found in America’s tap water since 2004, and over half of these pollutants are completely unregulated and can legally exist in any amount.

At the current levels of contamination, the public is starting to question the quality of tap water and wonders if it is safe enough to drink. Based on these facts, it’s no wonder that the demand for Kangen Water® is constantly increasing.

Bottled water

Bottled water

Bottled water is not necessarily healthier than tap water and yet it costs much more! Although associated with healthy water, bottled water is not guaranteed to be any healthier than tap water. Often the only difference is the added minerals which have no proven health benefits.

A four-year study by the Natural Resources Defense Council shows that 1/3 of the bottled water tested contains levels of contamination which exceed allowable limits. Bottled water can also be slightly acidic, which may affect your body’s pH balance. Finally, the environmental impact caused by the production and disposal of plastic bottles is harmful to our ecosystem.

Reverse osmosis water

Reverse osmosis water

Reverse Osmosis is a filtering process which may be effective in areas that do not receive municipally treated water and is commonly used in bottled water facilities. The problem with this process is that dangerous chemicals like pesticides, herbicides, and chlorine are molecularly smaller than water and can pass freely through the filter. Reverse osmosis removes healthy, naturally occurring water minerals. These minerals not only provide good taste, they also serve a vital function in the body’s system. When stripped of these minerals, water can be unhealthy. Also, 2-3 gallons of water are wasted for every gallon of purified water produced.

Here is one person’s opposition to Alkalized Water:

” . . . alkaline water, like any clean water, is a far better choice for hydrating than soda or an additive-filled sports drink. If you choose to see an expensive machine as a gateway to a healthier lifestyle or to give you an edge when competing in sports, then jump right in. It’s part and parcel of an alkaline diet, . . .”

Getting in Touch With Your Body

Breast Thermography vs Mammogram

In November 2009 the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recommended that for women ages 41-50 that a mammogram should be considered a very private decision between doctor and patient.  Currently the most utilized breast cancer screening techniques are done with ultrasound or mammography.  Many believe that a mammogram is the best test for detecting breast cancer early; however, according to studies conducted, a thermogram identifies precancerous or cancerous cells earlier and produce unambiguous results which cuts down on additional testing.  Thermography doesn’t hurt the body or sensitive breast tissue.  Dr. Christiane Northrup

Breast thermography detects patterns of heat produced from the increased circulation produced by abnormal metabolic activity in cancer cells.  It is a physiological test that detects changes in breast tissue that shows the correlation with the presence cancer or pre-cancer states.

Thermography does not use any form of ionizing radiation (x-ray).  Thermography uses an infrared thermograph camera that makes tens-of-thousands of detailed measurements of skin temperature at a distance of five to eight feet.  It collects electronic data of absolute temperature measurements viewed by an electronic image giving a spectrum of colors.  The colors indicate increased or decreased levels of infrared radiation or Heat being emitted from the body’s surface.

Breast thermography has the ability to detect the first signs that cancer may be forming up to 10 years before any other procedure can detect it.

Thermography is safer than mammography because:

  • it doesn’t spread cancer cells throughout your body by rupturing capillaries near undetectable cancers;
  • it cannot ruin your figure;
  • it gives off zero radiation;
  • it catches 90% of cancers (compared to 5-80% by mammography);
  • it signals very few false positives (only  10% compared to 27% by mammography;
  • it has predictive value–the hotter the tumor, the faster it’s growth;
  • while mammography shows only structure by x-rays, thermography shows live function by heat;
  • because it predicts, it gives you advance warning of possible trouble.

Inflammatory Breast Cancer

There is early detection through Thermography Screening.  The faster a malignant tumor grows, the more infrared radiation is generated.  Results from thermography screening can lead to earlier detection and longer life.

Medically, it is not known the cause of Inflammatory Breast Cancer (IBC).  It is suspected that it’s a pathogen, i.e. visual signs of an infected insect bite that is spreading throughout the breast.

  • may be connected to 6% of breast cancers;
  • fast growing inflammatory cancer with low survival rates;
  • mammograms do not pick up this kind of cancer;
  • self-examinations do not help detect IBC;
  • thermograms will detect IBC

Be treated early for Breast Cancer–only 20% of biopsied breast lumps are cancerous.  If cancer is found early, there are choices for treatment.  With prompt treatment the outlook is good.  Most women treated early for breast cancer will be free from it for the rest of their lives.
