Energy and Metabolism

Your body has many complex processes that directly relate to your fitness.  The chemical and physical processes of your body are known as metabolism.  It provides you with the energy to maintain a healthy lifestyle.

When you eat a healthy diet on a daily basis, energy is being transferred throughout your body.  You need a continuous supply of energy for the cells of your body.  Through the digestion process, carbohydrates, fats, and proteins are broken down to simpler forms such as glucose, fatty acids, and amino acids.  Some of the glucose is immediately used for energy while the remaining glucose (glycogen) is stored in the muscles and liver.

Age may a determining factor on how much or how little energy is burned or utilized, but it mostly depends on whether you are physically fit and active or whether you are more sedentary in your lifestyle.

The normal body temperature varies from person to person, but it just depends on an individual’s metabolic rate.  It stands to reason that the higher the body temperature, the higher the metabolism.  The lower the normal body temperature, the slower the metabolic rate.  Generally, body temperature is lower in the morning due to fasting and rest as opposed to evenings after physical activity and meals.

Eating the right kinds of food will help increase your metabolism; however, eating foods too high in acidity may get your body chemistry out of balance and interfere with your metabolism.  [Keep in mind that proper breathing and hydration are two other key components for improving metabolism.]

Starting the Day with the Right Food Choices:  Breakfast

If you go back to your agrarian roots [agriculture, farming], you will discover that Breakfast was the most important meal of the day.  It was the source of energy that your ancestors needed to keep them going throughout the day.  It is somewhat different today, in that you may live a more sedentary lifestyle.

Breakfast has become the most abused meal of the day in our modern information and technology age, either because we may not be eating breakfast or we may be eating the wrong kind of breakfast.  Are you in such a hurry to start your intense, demanding day that you only grab whatever is handy or you skip it altogether?

If you do eat breakfast, what does it consist of?

  • A piece of toast or cold cereal and a glass of orange juice or equivalent
  • A breakfast smoothie
  • Eggs that are poached, soft-boiled or over-easy in butter
  • Fruit, i.e., avocado, melons, lemons or limes

The first choice gives your body a quick boost of energy, but dramatically raises your blood-sugar level.  The problem with this type is that it is a sugar-based breakfast setting yourself up for failure the rest of the day.  Why?  Because that quick spurt of energy only lasts from 30 to 45 minutes, and then you want or crave some more sugar to maintain that energy level.

In reality, you need a breakfast that is high in protein and good fat so your energy level is maintained, and not at the expense of your blood-sugar level.  We recommend the following recipe for a Breakfast Smoothie to our clients:
